A Theory of Knowledge (ToK) essay is a key requirement of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. Preparation
Before starting, be sure to carefully consider your prescribed title. It’s advisable to think about two or three before deciding on one. Once chosen, jot down your initial ideas and think about how to find evidence to support these ideas.
For each title, you will need to choose two Areas of Knowledge (AoKs) to explore with reference to your chosen title.
Essay Structure
A ToK essay requires a particular structure, which is outlined below:
- Introduction: Should include a brief outline of what the essay question is about, what the essay aims to explore and which AoKs will be used.
- Body: This is where the real analysis happens. You should consider different ways of exploring the essay question and put forward claims and counterclaims about it. Every claim should be supported by evidence and examples.
- Conclusion: Recap of main points made, reiteration of the essay question and the overall ‘answer’ to the question.
Key Elements
- Claims and Counterclaims: For every point you make (claim), introduce a counter-argument (counterclaim) and balance the two.
- Examples: Use specific and fresh examples to illustrate or introduce your points, avoid clichés.
- Language: You are encouraged to use the first person (I-form), demonstrating your reflective engagement. Keep the language simple and clear.
Word Count and Submission
The maximum length of the ToK essay is 1,600 words. This includes quotations but excludes acknowledgements, references, any maps/charts/diagrams, and illustrations. It’s essential to indicate the number of words when you submit the essay.
Examiners will stop reading after 1,600 words.
Grading
The ToK essay is graded on an IB rubric with eight criteria each scored between 0-2 points, making the total score for the essay a maximum of 16 points. To pass, a student needs a minimum of an “E” grade, which is 9 points.
